Grieve Well; Mourn On Purpose.

Art Is Our Access… Bringing Light To Dark Places.

Grief is unexpressed love held in our bodies. Through art, we give that love a voice, finding relief from suffering and opening ourselves to healing.

Art.Heals.Grief Newsletter

Delivered straight to your inbox, this newsletter explores the intersection of grief, art and community. Expect personal stories about gatherings, information about public workshops and other opportunities for ways to connect with fellow grievers.

Guided by the Companioning Model created by Dr. Alan Wolfelt, expert Grief Counselor and Thanotologist, I believe that grief isn’t a void to be filled or fixed but a sacred invitation to transform pain and suffering into healing and deeper love. Through creative expression and intimate community, we honor loss, illuminate our hidden resilience and reclaim our capacity to love fully by grieving well and mourning on purpose.

In 2019, Hillside Swim Club hosted an Art.Heals.Grief gathering, providing a full-day exploration of creative expression for 25 grieving women. Through workshops in Kundalini Yoga, Active Meditation, Intuitive Sculpture, Modern Dance, and Drumming, participants discovered the artistic modalities that best helped them move their grief from within to the outside world. Throughout the day, Grief Fundamentals Mini Lessons offered insight and support, deepening the experience. We ended our time together with singing and a powerful closing ritual, one that filled our hearts with love and renewed our sense of hope. Drum Circle lead by Lisa Schonberg.

Past Gatherings

Over the years I have created spaces. where grief can be expressed, witnessed and transformed through a variety of creative practices. Each gathering is a unique experience, a co-collaboration among the women attending the event and myself. where we determine gentle yet powerful ways to process loss and reconnect with love. Here are a few past gatherings that have helped women just like you, mourn on purpose.

The Hyphen: Moving Forward by Reinterpreting the Past

Your story matters… every twist, every turn, each triumph and every lesson. The Hyphen is your chance to capture the life you have lived, honoring the people and the moments that have shaped you. Let’s craft your legacy together… one image, one word, one memory at a time.

Being wrapped in a memorial quilt is the next best thing to being hugged again. During this gathering we will stitch together memory and meaning, crafting a triangle puff quilt in the tradition of my Great Grandmother, Grace (Prall) Haney. Whether using a loved ones clothing or starting a new family heirloom, this quilt will connect generations past, present & future.

Scraps of Happiness: Making a Memorial Quilt

Spark, Crackle & Pop: The 60 Day Project

Feeling stuck? Compounded grief is the heightened state of overwhelm that occurs when we have several losses in a row. This 60 day project is your invitation to explore, uncollapse and bring play to an area of pain. No artistic skill needed, the first step is to join our ceative idea exchange to name your grief, choose your medium and make along side a community. Lets engage life, love and loss. Grieve well; mourn on purpose.

Chat & Chew @ The Checkered Cloth: A Potluck of Love

Food is love, memory, and connection. Join us for a special gathering where we honor those we've lost by bringing a dish that tells their story. As we share meals made from cherished recipes, we'll reminisce, celebrate their lives, and nourish our hearts together. Come with a plate and a story; leave with connection, healing, and a deeper appreciation for the love that lingers in every bite.

Grief Fundamentals: The Art of Grieving

Grief changes us, but how we engage with it shapes our healing. In this gathering, we’ll explore where grief lives in our bodies, the balance of masculine and feminine healing energies, and how to move from surviving to thriving. Through conversation and expressive arts, you’ll gain tools to process loss with intention and creativity. Come for love unleashed, bold conversations, and a space where your grief is honored.

Paint Your Path: The Landscape of Grief Within You

During our time together, we’ll use watercolor to explore and express the landscapes of our hearts. This session invites you to connect deeply with your emotions, memories, and healing journey through the flow of paint and color. As we create landscapes, we’ll reflect on the terrain of our own lives, discovering the beauty within our inner worlds that will guide you toward emotional expression, healing, and personal growth. No painting experience necessary.
